Community Supported Agriculture

A couple of folks have been asking about my CSA Box photo post yesterday, what is it, etc.
A CSA is Community Supported Agriculture. Sort of like a Co-op per sea. Basically you can purchase a share of a farm and you get a box of fresh sweet organic produce each week. We just got our first box this week. I am super excited about it. Not sure if many of you know, but I do have some health issues and was basically given an ultimatum - either spend money on organic produce or spend money on medical bills (of which I already have many). So, right then and there I decided to join a CSA and support a local farm. I know folks may want to know about pricing as well, and I will share that with you - we got a medium sized box and it is $24/week. They have a couple other sizes as well, depending on how many people, how often you cook, etc. We are currently supporting Terra Firma Farm in Yolo County.
Last night for dinner I made the following dish:
  • Heirloom Tomato Salad - tomatoes, onion and basil from CSA box, olive oil, salt and pepper
  • Sauteed Summer Squash - summer squash and onion from CSA box, olive oil
  • Brown Rice - organic from California as well
  • 1/4 of the large melon in the photo from yesterday for dessert!
